Pipeline stress analysis — buried, above ground and stations

Calculations to ASME B31.4, B31.8, EN 1594 and NEN 3650 for transmission lines, station piping and pig-trap areas, including the transition between them.

A pipeline is restrained by the soil along its whole length; where it rises into a station, a valve pit or a pig trap, that restraint stops and the accumulated thermal and pressure growth has to go somewhere. Most pipeline problems sit exactly there — at the virtual anchor, the bends near the surface, the anchor block, the first supports above ground.

The studio models soil–pipe interaction, calculates anchor-block loads and checks the above-ground piping together with the buried section, so that station design and pipeline design are consistent. Experience covers natural gas networks, 48-inch water lines, CO₂ transport and hydrogen-ready systems.

What the package covers

  • Buried pipelines: soil springs, friction, virtual anchor length, upheaval and lateral stability at bends.
  • Transition areas: anchor blocks, valve pits, insulating joints, above-ground stations.
  • Pig-trap and launcher/receiver areas, metering and compressor stations.
  • Crossings, settlement and imposed displacements.
  • Gas, water, CO₂ and hydrogen service; code checks to B31.4, B31.8, EN 1594 or NEN 3650.

Typical deliverables

  • Pipeline and station calculation models.
  • Soil parameters and assumptions register.
  • Anchor-block and support loads.
  • Calculation report with code compliance and recommendations.

Frequently asked questions

Do you work to NEN 3650 for the Dutch market?

Yes — the Porthos CO₂ project (pipeline and pig-trap area) was calculated to NEN 3650 with Ple4Win.

Can the station piping and the pipeline be analysed together?

Yes, and it is recommended: the buried section is modelled far enough to reach the virtual anchor, so the loads at the station boundary are realistic.

What soil data do you need?

A geotechnical report or at least soil type, cover depth, unit weight and friction angle; where data are missing, bounding assumptions are agreed and documented.

Need a stress analysis, a calculation package or a second opinion?

Send the line list, isometrics or model and the applicable code: you receive a defined scope and a fixed-price proposal.
